Gas Boilers

A boiler is an essential part of a home, providing you with hot water and heating, there are several different types:

Combination Boilers
Combination boilers can be cheaper to install, although they are not as efficient as condensing boilers.

Condensing Boilers
These boilers are very high efficiency as they do not have to work as hard. These types of boilers can be more expensive to buy but can have lower energy bills in the long term.

Back Boilers
An old back boiler in the fireplace area should now be replaced by a condensing high efficiency boiler, under recent building regulations.

Combination Boilers

Combination boilers can be cheaper to install, although they are not as efficient as condensing boilers. They work on providing instantaneous hot water. However, the flow can be limited if there are other taps running at the same time.

Advantages:

  • They are tough and reliable
  • They are also economical to run and can provide a vast amount of hot water
  • There is no requirement for costly hot water storage
  • Labor and material saving
  • Instantaneous hot water
  • Drinking water from all taps
Disadvantages:
Direct hot water heat exchanger
  • Rates can be higher than that of a storage system
  • Require more wall space
  • No stored hot and cold water

    Condensing Boilers

These boilers are very high efficiency as they do not have to work as hard. They turn more fuel into heat by catching wasted heat from a heat exchanger. These types of boilers can be more expensive to buy but can have lower energy bills in the long term. Condensing boilers are available for Gas boilers and Oil Boilers.

Condensing boilers are a suitable option to help with the environment as the U.K Government are aiming to reduce C.O.2 levels by 20% by year 2008.

A condensing gas boiler may have a seasonal efficiency of around 88% compared to non-condensing boiler at about 75%, and an older type boiler at 55%-60%.

Advantages:

  • Less carbon dioxide produced so they are more environmentally friendly
  • Use less gas
  • Lower fuel bills
  • Energy efficient

Disadvantages:

  • Can be more expensive to buy than other boiler types

Back Boilers

Back boilers deliver hot water to taps, showers or baths all at the same time. An old back boiler in the fireplace area should now be replaced by a condensing high efficiency boiler, under recent building regulations.

Advantages:

  • Reliable boiler
  • Stored water
  • Installers are familiar with it
  • Choice of many fire fronts
  • No extra space needed for it
  • The boiler is hidden behind chimney

Disadvantages:

  • Hot water may run out
  • More pipe work is needed
  • One drinking water tap

Common Boiler Faults

These are common faults that indicate a boiler needs servicing:

  • Flames appear irregular or yellow
  • Smell of fumes or gas - (turn off gas at the gas meter) speak to National Grid then call us.
  • Stains or smoke marks around the appliance.
  • Overheating - temperature gauge goes above 80 degrees centigrade .
  • Pressure drops rapidly - boiler needs refilling more than once a month.
  • Fan whines loudly or screeches.
  • Pilot goes out repeatedly.
  • Poor hot water.
  • Radiators don't all heat up at the same time - possibly a boiler fault, or it is equally possible that the system is unbalanced.

Buying a New Boiler?

Here are some tips for you to consider before buying a new boiler:

  • What do you want the boiler to produce? Hot Water, High Temperature Hot Water, Low Pressure Steam, High Pressure Steam.

  • Even though condensing boilers are the most expensive, they are more efficient than other boiler types and in the long term, could save you the most money.

  • How big a boiler would you require? How much hot water can satisfy the needs of your household?

  • What will the boiler be used for? Will it be used for space heating, humidification or process steam?

  • What type of fuel do you have available? Coal, Wood, Natural Gas, Fuel oil, or a combination of fuels.

  • After the boiler has been installed, who will take care of it? This is a critical factor to consider, obviously we would me more than happy to take care of your boiler, it's our specialty!
